5 Steps To Thread A Sewing Machine Needle:

This is similar to hand sewing. In both, we have to pass the thread through the needle eye. For the sewing machine, we need to follow some more steps, such as:

1. Raise The Needle and Foot:

For a domestic manual machine, rotate the handwheel. This will lift the needle upwards. 

You also have to lift the presser foot to lower the tension.  Ensure that the needle and presser foot are as high as possible.

Important tip: Always set the right-sized needle for the thread size you are using. Otherwise, it will not pass through the eye.

2. Turn Off the Machine:

Accidental stitches can happen when the machine is powered on. Always turn it off. 

3. Follow The Machine’s Thread Path:

Now, pass the thread through the thread guides. Many modern machines have numbered thread paths. These markings make it easy for beginners. 

The Threading Process:

1. Once you select the thread color, put that spool in the spool pin. Pass the thread through the metal hook at the top. It is the top thread guide. 

2. Pass it through the tension disc path.  Guide it downwards at the right-hand channel. You will find it at the bottom of the machine’s body. Take the thread upwards through the left-sided channel.

3. Then pass it through the take-up lever’s eye. After passing the thread, the lever usually clicks from right to left.

4. Now, locate the left channel at the bottom. Pass the thread through it backwards. 

5. Final thread guides are located just above the needle. Pass the thread through them.

4. Thread The Needle’s Eye:

Always thread the needle from front to back. 

Beginner’s hack: In my early days, I kept a white paper behind the needle. So I could see the thread properly.

Gently pass the thread through the needle’s eye. 

Always cut the thread diagonally. This cut should be sharp at a 45-degree angle. 

5. Place The Thread Under the Presser Foot:

Now secure the thread. If you don’t lift the presser foot, it will jam the thread due to incorrect thread tension.

Pull the thread from the needle’s eye. You will need 2 inches more. 

Pass it under the lifted presser foot. Pass it outwards to the backside. Leave the thread tail 3-4 inches.

Thread a Sewing Machine Needle Using a Threader:

Threaders can be of two types:

1. Manual
2. Built-in needle threaders

1. Using Manual Threaders:

1. Lift the needle to its highest point.
2. Pass the threader’s wire loop into the needle eye.
3. You will see a big diamond- or oval-shaped wire hole in the threader.
4. Pass the thread through it.
5. Hold the thread with your other hand.
6. Pull the threader back from the needle eye.
7. Remove the thread from the threader’s wire hole.
8. Done! You have successfully threaded the sewing machine needle!

2. Using Built-in Needle Threaders

Some machines have built-in needle threaders.

Turn the hand wheel until the needle reaches its highest position.

1. These threaders have a mechanical lever system.
2. Pull this lever to the lowest point. Its tiny hook will swing forward.
3. So the wire can go through the tiny needle hole.
4. Pass the thread through the lever guides and latch it in the lever’s hook.
5. Release the lever. The thread gets pulled.
6. Pull it backwards to thread the needle!
